Cross-Province Check-in with the Ontario Arts Council - A Conversation with the OAC Chair, Director & CEO and Director of Granting

November 14, 2017

By now, many of you will have heard the good news announced on August 29, 2017, by Premier Kathleen Wynne and Eleanor McMahon, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport: OAC will receive a further funding increase over the next three years on top of this year’s previously announced $5 million. This will bring OAC’s base funding from $60 million per year in 2016-17 to $80 million per year by 2020-21.

Here’s how the government’s new investment in Ontario’s not-for-profit professional arts sector will flow:

Increase by year to the OAC's 2016-17 base funding ($60M)

  • 2016-17: $60M
  • 2017-18: +$5M = $65M
  • 2018-19: +$10M = $70M
  • 2019-20: +$15M = $75M
  • 2020-21: +$20M = $80M

The new funding is in addition to the recently launched Indigenous Culture Fund, which has been funded by the government at $5 million per year.

Rita Davies, OAC Chair, Peter Caldwell, Director & CEO, and Carolyn Vesely, Director of Granting, will be visiting a series of Ontario communities in November and December, to answer questions about OAC funding and future plans to support Ontario’s arts sector. Each session will include an informal presentation by Rita, Peter and Carolyn, followed by a Q&A.

The OAC will schedule an online session in January for anyone interested but too far from a scheduled location or otherwise unable to attend.

OAC dates for each community session

Updated on October 30, 2017.
