Community and Multidisciplinary Arts Officer Bushra Junaid promoted to Outreach and Development Manager
We are delighted to announce that Bushra Junaid, Community and Multidisciplinary Arts Officer, has been promoted to Outreach Manager. Bushra will assume her new position in March 2009 when she returns from a leave of absence that begins January 2, 2009. Bushra will be developing and leading OAC’s outreach activities. Her new role will support several strategies identified in our new strategic plan. Loree Lawrence will replace Bushra as Acting Community and Multidisciplinary Arts Officer while we undertake a search to fill this position.
John Degen is new Literature Officer
Following Lorraine Filyer’s retirement after more than 18 years at OAC, we welcome John Degen as the Ontario Arts Council’s Literature Officer after an extensive search. Click here to read the news release
Popular and World Music Officer Michael Murray now also responsible for the Arts Service Organizations program
Since December 1, 2008, Michael has been managing the Arts Services Organizations (ASO) program. He will partner with ASOs to offer services to artists and arts organizations in Ontario. Virginie Ouellette-Berruel will act as Program Assistant.

OAC bids goodbye to Steven Campbell, Director of Community Partnerships
We would like to acknowledge Steven’s 18 years of service and contribution to OAC, the past nine years as Director of Community Partnerships and prior to that as Arts Education Officer. Steven’s knowledge and passion for arts education played a significant role in the evolution of this sector at OAC. He initiated arts education partnerships with York University and the Artists in Residence Pilot program, and played a major role in the development and coordination of CADAC. He also represented OAC on various external committees such as Municipal Cultural Planning, rural and co-op associations, and in earlier years helped initiate the Task Force on Arts in the Community.
We are pleased to announce that Lizzy Braoudakis will be replacing Jessica Deljouravesh as Granting Support Assistant as of January 5, 2009. As mentioned in our September e-newsletter, Jessica will be replacing Diane Eaton, who will retire as Program Assistant for the music office on January 16, 2009. After Lizzy moves into her new position, Martin Quilaneta will be taking over as Office Services Clerk for the next six months.

More funding for community festivals and events
The government of Ontario recently invested $9 million in the
Celebrate Ontario program.
Celebrate Ontario grants are available to new and existing festivals and events, to develop festivals and other attractions aimed at both new and repeat visitors to Ontario. The program is offered through the Ministry of Tourism. Application forms and guidelines are available at
www.tourism.gov.on.ca
The application deadline is January 16, 2009.

Deadline for artists to submit applications for cultural program at World Expo 2010 extended to January 21, 2009
Cirque du Soleil Inc. has been hired by Canadian Heritage to plan, curate, organize and manage the cultural program presented at the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai, China. The program will focus on celebrating Canadian culture by promoting renowned and emerging Canadian artists and creators from a variety of disciplines.
The Canada Council for the Arts will offer consultation and advisory services for the selection of the estimated 200 Canadian artists who will take part in the cultural program. The deadline to submit an application is January 21, 2009.

Reception celebrating Ontario Arts Council and University of Toronto partnership to provide residences for visiting international artists
In partnership with the Ontario Arts Council, the University of Toronto will provide housing for international artists who wish to work in Toronto or collaborate with Ontario artists. The residences are located at New College (42 Willcocks Street). The residences will be available as of January 2009. Please visit our website for details.

City of Toronto dedicates park to OAC board member Rita Cox to honour her community contributions
On October 22, 2008, Toronto City Council members held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the official opening of the Rita Cox Park, located at 14 Machells Ave. in Toronto. Click here to view the location of the map
“Rita Cox is an exceptional individual who, through her love of the spoken and written word, has inspired people of all ages and has opened the literary world to her audiences,” said Councillor Gord Perks. “Her work touches the lives of residents in the Parkdale community, especially children and newcomers to the city. In naming a park in her honour, the City of Toronto celebrates Dr. Cox’s achievements and continuing contributions to the community.”
