Ontario Arts Council Aboriginal Arts Award

The Ontario Arts Council Aboriginal Arts Award was created in 2012 by the Ontario Arts Council (OAC) in recognition of the distinctive contributions made by Aboriginal artists and arts leaders in Ontario. The award will be presented annually to honour their distinguished careers and outstanding achievements. The winner will receive a cash award of $7,500.

The award also aims to acknowledge the many promising Aboriginal artists who will become future Aboriginal leaders in the arts in Ontario. The award winner will be asked to select an emerging Aboriginal artist who best exemplifies the next generation of Aboriginal leadership in the arts. The recipient will receive a cash award of $2,500.

The award winner and the nominated emerging artist will be announced at a local celebration (chosen in consultation with the winner) as part of National Aboriginal History Month in June each year.

Nomination deadline: April 2, 2012

Who can submit a nomination? Any Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada who resides in Ontario. Nominators can submit only one nomination at each deadline.

Nominators who are members of their candidate’s immediate family (spouse or equivalent, son or daughter, parent, sibling or member of the immediate household), members of the candidate’s organization’s board of directors or employed by the candidate are ineligible. Self-nominations will not be accepted.

If two or more nominations are made for the same candidate, the OAC will consult with the candidate to see which nomination the candidate accepts; the other nomination(s) will be withdrawn.
