OAC Requests $35 Million over Three Years

The following is a summary of OAC’s business case request.  The proposed increase would add a total of $35 million to OAC’s current base resources over the next three fiscal years.  The breakdown covers the following strategic investments:

$21 million

Investment in core operating funding for over 250 arts organizations, to bring OAC’s average contribution to at least 10 percent of their revenues and to respond to the exponential growth in the field.

$7 million

Investment in individual artists and creative projects, based on 20 percent of OAC’s granting budget, to improve the rate of success of artists applying to launch new programs in the regions including the North and for programs addressing francophone artists, Aboriginal artists and artists who are culturally diverse.

$3 million

Investment through OAC’s Artists in Education program, to expand the number of artists in the schools and to establish one artist-in-residence in every school board in the province.  Arts education activities supported by OAC-funded organizations reached 2,328,866 Ontarians under 18 years of age in 2002–2003.  Increased investment will help to reach the remaining students.

$2 million

Investment in provincial, national and international touring and audience engagement, to double the number of organizations touring Ontario, to re-establish the Ontario-Quebec exchange and to support Ontario organizations touring abroad that are currently at a disadvantage in relation to Quebec and other Canadian artists with access to provincial support.

$2 million

Investment in resources, systems and outreach to regional, francophone, Aboriginal and culturally diverse communities, to implement expanded programs and services, keeping OAC’s administration expenses to less than 12 percent of budget.

The Arts Community Makes the Case

Momentum has been gathering in Ontario’s arts and culture community to ensure that the arts receive their fair share of public funds.  In June, representatives of the arts community came together for two meetings with the Honourable Caroline Di Cocco, Minister of Culture, to support the Ontario Arts Council’s business case request for more funding.
