Indigenous Visual Artists' Materials

The program supports Ontario-based First Nations, Inuit and Métis artists working in the visual arts, crafts or traditional/customary Indigenous art forms to create art work. Grants of $500 help cover the cost of buying art materials and supplies.

This is a third-party recommender program. Applications are made to and funding recommendations made by the Indigenous organizations designated as recommenders for the program. See “About recommender grants” under “Program-specific definitions” below for more information.

Deadline Dates

The program runs from July 5, 2017 to February 15, 2018. Recommenders will set their own schedules for review of applications.

Updated application forms as well as information on recommenders and deadlines will be posted in early July 2017.

About recommender grants

Recommenders are organizations authorized by the Ontario Arts Council (OAC) to receive applications, review them and make recommendations for the grants in this program. OAC allocates a budget to each of the participating recommenders.

Recommenders make decisions based on the quality of the artist’s work and other funding priorities they establish.

Within six weeks of an application deadline the recommender will inform artists whether their application will be recommended for funding. The recommender forwards applications to OAC. OAC reviews applications for final eligibility and then mails approved grant cheques directly to artists.

The recommender sends the application to OAC. OAC reviews applications for final eligibility, then notifies applicants by email that their notification letter is available online in Nova. OAC sends grant cheques by regular mail directly to the applicants.

Conflict of interest

Artists who have a conflict of interest with a particular recommender may not apply to that recommender. Conflicts of interest include:

  • Anyone who is an employee, board member or member of the recommender’s grant review committee.
  • Immediate family members of described above.
