Camie receives 2022 Colleen Peterson Songwriting Award

October 13, 2022

Folk singer-songwriter Camie is this year’s recipient of the Ontario Arts Council (OAC)’s Colleen Peterson Songwriting Award for her song "Winter."

Camie will receive the award as part of the Ontario Folk Music Awards on Sunday, October 16. This event is taking place at Folk Music Ontario (FMO)’s annual conference, held this year in London, Ontario. The award will be presented by OAC’s CEO, Michael Murray.

About Camie

Camie
  • Camie is the alternative folk project of Toronto-based musician and multidisciplinary artist Camille Intson. Her confessional prose and poignant lyricism draw inspiration from great Canadiana songbirds, including Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen, and more contemporary influences such as Fiona Apple, Phoebe Bridgers, Brandi Carlile and Laura Marling.
  • Camie recently released her EP troubadour, written and produced in complete isolation during the second and third waves of the COVID-19 pandemic. The album was praised as “a stunningly beautiful work,” by the Hamilton Spectator, which also noted that “it’s the lyric imagery that makes these songs special.” Radio station Indie88 said that “you’re sure to be captivated from the get-go” by troubadour, which “really pack[s] an emotional punch.”
  • Camie’s Peterson Award–winning song, “Winter,” is her first new single following her EP. Pairing rich vocals and gentle guitar-picking with lush, ambient soundscapes, “Winter” paints a portrait of a young woman meditating on loneliness and unrequited love with the changing of the seasons. It was called “a transcendent listening experience” by Buzz Music.

Quote

The jury that selected “Winter” for the Peterson Award stated: “This song is beautiful and captivating. We love the arrangement, writing, delivery and production – everything about it is really awesome.”

About the Colleen Peterson Songwriting Award

  • The Colleen Peterson Songwriting Fund was established at the Ontario Arts Council in 2003 by Peterson’s sister, Shirley Richardson, and her friend, singer-songwriter Laura Bird.
  • The annual $1,000 award honours Peterson’s contribution to Canadian music by supporting and promoting the work of Ontario’s emerging singer-songwriters in the roots, traditional, folk and country genres.
  • Nominations are received from FMO’s Songs From the Heart competition. FMO also assembles the jury that chooses the award winner. This year’s jury consisted of Cécile Doo-Kingué, Cassidy Houston, Candace Shaw and Amie Therrien.
  • Previous winners include Julie Title (2021), Danielle Knibbe (2020) and Suzanne Jarvie (2019). Click here for a full list of past recipients.
