OAC relaunching Chalmers Arts Fellowships program
The Ontario Arts Council (OAC) is pleased to announce the return of the Chalmers Arts Fellowships program in 2022. For the past two years, this program has been on hold due to the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
What is the Chalmers Arts Fellowships program?
This program supports artists with 10 years or more of professional experience to undertake a unique, large-scale exploration of their discipline or practice. These grants are not for producing artistic work – rather, they are for exploration, experimentation and investigation. The program provides support at a time in an artist’s career when a concentration on artistic growth will have the greatest impact on their long-term artistic development.
The Chalmers Family Fund also supports the Chalmers Professional Development Projects program (deadline: November 16, 2022, 1 p.m. ET), which supports artists with any length of professional experience in acquiring new skills or enhancing existing ones.
What happened to this program during the pandemic?
In spring 2020, OAC temporarily suspended several programs with a significant travel component, including the Chalmers Arts Fellowships program. The budgets for these programs were redirected to several temporary programs to serve Ontario’s arts community, including the Arts Response Initiative.
The Chalmers Professional Development Projects had two deadlines in 2021. The June 2021 deadline funded activities that were not held in-person (e.g. learning conducted online, by phone or by correspondence). The November 2021 deadline resumed funding of in-person learning.
The Chalmers Family Fund
was established at OAC in 1979 with donations by Floyd. S. Chalmers, Jean A. Chalmers and M. Joan Chalmers.
