OAC receives confirmation of $60 million funding from the Province in 2023-24

April 17, 2023

The Ontario Arts Council (OAC) is pleased to share that Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport (MTCS) has confirmed that OAC will receive $60 million as its operating allocation for the 2023-24 fiscal year.

“We are delighted to hear this good news of continued commitment from Minister Neil Lumsden,” said Rita Davies, CM, OAC chair. “The work of the OAC is aligned with the priorities detailed in the Government of Ontario’s 2023 budget, Building a Strong Ontario. Ontario artists and arts organizations not only contribute to local economies but improve the quality of life for people wherever they are.”

“This government is proud to support the Ontario Arts Council, which plays a key role in supporting and promoting artists and arts organizations in our province,” said Neil Lumsden, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport. “We are fortunate to have such a thriving and diverse arts sector that enriches our lives and makes significant contributions to our economy – supporting thousands of jobs and driving tourism across Ontario.”

The Arts and Culture Sector and OAC’s Funding Impact

  • In 2020, arts and culture products and services represented $27 billion or 3.4% of the province's gross domestic product (GDP) and 254,985 jobs (3.8% of total Ontario employment).
  • In 2019-20, a total of 12.8 million audience members attended events hosted by OAC-funded artists and arts organizations in Ontario.
  • In 2019-20, there were 2.8 million arts learners participating in arts engaged events by OAC-funded artists and arts organizations.
In the year ahead, OAC will continue to be guided by its recently launched five-year strategic plan, Reset.Renew.Revitalize.
