Arts, Culture, and Heritage Participation in Canada’s Provinces and Largest Census Metropolitan Areas in 2016

This report examines the percentage of residents (15 or older) of Canadian provinces and 9 Census Metropolitan Areas who attended or participated in specific arts, culture and heritage activities in 2016.
 
This report is part of the Statistical Insights on the Arts series by Hill Strategies Research. It is based on Statistics Canada’s 2016 General Social Survey.
 
The Statistical Insights on the Arts series is funded by the Ontario Arts Council in partnership with the Department of Canadian Heritage and the Canada Council for the Arts as part of our shared commitment to making arts research available to inform the work of Canada’s arts community and educate the general public about Canada’s arts sector.

For more than 60 years, the Ontario Arts Council (OAC) has played a vital role in promoting and assisting the development of the arts for the enjoyment and benefit of Ontarians. The OAC reached 27.4 million people through events and arts education activities across the province in 2021-22. In 2023-24, OAC invested its grant program budget of $53.3 million in 219 communities across all 124 Ontario ridings, providing 2,149 grants to individual artists and 1,043 grants to organizations.
